How to Calculate AC Tonnage for Your Room
Choosing the correct AC tonnage is important for both cooling performance and electricity savings. An undersized AC may run continuously without cooling the room properly, while an oversized AC can increase upfront costs and cycle on and off frequently. Factors such as room size, ceiling height, sunlight exposure, number of occupants, and electronic appliances all influence the ideal cooling capacity.
Our AC Tonnage Calculator helps estimate the right AC size for your room based on these factors. Once you know the correct tonnage, you can use our AC Bill Calculator to estimate monthly electricity costs.
1 Ton vs 1.5 Ton vs 2 Ton AC
A 1 Ton AC is generally suitable for small rooms up to 120 square feet. A 1.5 Ton AC is often recommended for medium sized bedrooms and living spaces between 120 and 180 square feet. Larger rooms may require a 2 Ton AC or higher depending on occupancy and climate conditions.
Selecting a larger AC than necessary does not always improve cooling. The goal is to match the cooling capacity to the room size. Refer to the room size chart above to understand which AC tonnage is recommended for different room dimensions.
Factors That Affect AC Tonnage Requirements
Several factors can affect the amount of cooling required:
- Room size and floor area
- Ceiling height
- Direct sunlight exposure
- Number of people regularly occupying the room
- Heat generated by electronic devices
- Local climate and outdoor temperature
For best results, combine the recommended AC tonnage with a high-efficiency inverter AC. You can also explore our AC guides and energy saving tips to learn how to reduce electricity consumption and lower your monthly power bill.
Room Size vs Recommended AC Tonnage
Choosing the correct AC tonnage improves cooling performance, reduces electricity consumption, and extends the life of your air conditioner.
| Room Type | Room Size | Recommended AC |
|---|---|---|
| Small Bedroom | Up to 120 sq ft | 1 Ton |
| Master Bedroom | 120 - 180 sq ft | 1.5 Ton |
| Large Bedroom | 180 - 250 sq ft | 2 Ton |
| Living Room | 200 - 300 sq ft | 2 Ton |
| Large Living Room | 300 - 400 sq ft | 2.5 Ton |
| Office / Hall | 400+ sq ft | 3 Ton or Higher |
Note: Actual AC tonnage requirements may vary depending on ceiling height, sunlight exposure, insulation, occupancy, electronic appliances, and local climate conditions. Use this chart as a general guideline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about AC electricity bills, energy savings, tonnage selection, and star ratings.
Your AC electricity bill is calculated using the AC's power consumption (kWh), daily usage hours, number of days, and your electricity tariff rate. The formula is: Units Consumed x Tariff Rate.
